I was really excited about this one because I like slow-burn thrillers that intertwine the supernatural with the psychological; movies that keep the audience guessing if there are actual paranormal activities or whether it's all inside a character's head. This one fits the bill nicely. Quick Summary: Bea and Paul just got married and are spending their honeymoon at Bea's family cabin in rural Canada. They bump into Will, Bea's old friend and possible girlhood crush, and his very paranoid wife who tells them they should leave the town. Paul wakes in the middle of the night and Bea is gone. He finds her naked in the woods with no memory of what happened to her. He slowly starts to realize something has changed in Bea, and he sets out to discover what happened that night in the woods. Gooey Says: Scenery and lighting are well done and atmospheric. Lots of lingering shots that help build suspense. It's the kind of movie where you find yourself a third of the way in checking the Netflix info to confirm that, yes, you are indeed watching a horror movie. The cabin was well thought out and provided traction for the creepy as well as to further emphasize the space/unknown between two people who think they know each other so well (the bear skin, Bea driving the boat and tying the knots, fishing, the hollow duck. I did think some of the quick cuts during dialogue (first breakfast in the kitchen scene) were a little disorienting, and thought the first interaction with Will was a little on the nose, especially for a movie that had been so patient up to that point. Rose Leslie (Ygritte. was great in it. She's beautiful, haunting, threatening, and sympathetic. But Harry Treadway, who plays Victor Frankenstein in Showtime's Penny Dreadful, fell flat for me. He has the right look as a young Brooklyn husband out of his element at his new wife's rural cabin, but when the intensity ratchets up, I didn't think his performance kept pace. Maybe he has trouble yelling in an American accent (he and Rose are both British) which is too bad because, frankly, what could be more American (timely political discourse reference. There were a handful of mostly forgivable holes, I'm taking you to a hospital. jump cut to Bea and Paul fishing. Some clever Checkhov's gun moments, particularly the use of the wedding video. Will's was the only one where I chuckled to myself ( Still wearing that character-defining hat, I see. Who was that guy? Ben Huber? Apparently he's a writer/producer. His acting was pretty bad, and the writing for his character seemed lazy as well. Let's hope he's one HELLUVA producer! IMDB rating: 5. 7/10 Gooey rating: 7/10 Final thoughts: Good. Almost great. Some of the misses came from how much potential the concept had, not all of it realized. The ending managed to be thought provoking even though there were some pretty clear navigational cues. Would definitely recommend. Day 2: The Awakening (2011) Directed and co-written by Nick Exactly. Quick Summary: Set in 1920's England, Florence (Rebecca Hall) has spent her life debunking spiritual hoaxes, while simultaneously yearning to find a way to communicate with her fiancee who died in WWI. She meets Mallory (Dominic West) who convinces her to investigate a boarding school where a boy has just died after seeing a ghost. She travels to the school where she discovers phenomena even she can't explain. Gooey Says: Cool period horror film. Really well shot and does a lot on a pretty minimal budget. Ghost effects were creepy and I was genuinely huddled into a little ball when she discovers a doll house in the attic where each room is arranged to show scenes of what she'd been up to throughout the school including in the attic where THERE'S A CREEPY FUCKING DOLL CHILD BEHIND HER! Florence is a really strong character and Rebecca Hall is outstanding at being a posh, Oxford educated, no bullshit paranormal investigator. Chemistry between Florence and Mallory is good too. Dominic West is awesome as always (McNulty. but the director has too many ideas and can't tie them all together by the end of the film. Case in point: Mallory's self-harm that Florence somehow links to survivor's guilt about the war and explains, at length, at the end of the film with little to no evidence, while Mallory sits there mute. I'm kind of a sucker for old world England, and the rigidity and antiquity of the old boarding school is fascinating: palatial estate, huge empty hallways and staircases, immaculate school grounds, knee socks, teachers hitting pupils with a cane, a lot of "stiff upper lip, pip pip cheerio. When the winter break comes, Florence is left alone at the school to investigate with only Mallory, Maud - the maid, and Tom - a sad little boy whose parents are in India and so he has no family to go to for St. Swiggins whatever they celebrate in turn of the century ristmas you say? That's not very antiquated. Act III's are hard, eh? SPOILERS AHEAD! The Awakening bravely attempts to pull off a twist that The Sixth Sense did 12 years before! 12 yeeeeaaaarrrrssss! It's not innovative, necessary, or very convincing - basically Florence realizes that she actually used to live in the house before it was converted to a boarding school and that her father went crazy and killed her mom and her little brother, Tom, who is now haunting the school, and WAS A GHOST THE WHOLE TIME! Whyyyyyy? Why not just have it be a demented ghost? Or a metaphor for the crumbling empire of England? Why the whole buried memory nonsense? What about her dead soldier fiancee? That was the most compelling character conflict she had! It's almost like Nick Murphy got called in to a producer's office who mentioned that his little girl was visiting tomorrow and she hated scary movies, so he needed to wrap this one up in a happy little bow. It's awful. A horrid, lame, ending. And it's hilarious that they have to undo all of the scary stuff they spent the ENTIRE MOVIE building up. Case in point: in another grown-man-clutching-his-cat-to-his-chest-moment, Florence finds a secret tunnel (which is, of course, very dark) that she crawls into and finds the world's creepiest doll with a rabbit head on it that plays a creepy French nursery rhyme. Awesome. I'm into it. BUT to explain it in the lame Florence used to live here ending, they show a flashback where she crawls into the tunnel to hide from her crazy dad and clutches THE WORLD'S CREEPIEST RABBIT HEADED DOLL to her chest for safety. It doesn't make sense! No human girl would find that doll the least bit comforting. It plays a song about children dying for chrissake! But Nick Murphy, hurriedly scribbling out the scary parts before the producer's daughter arrived, obviously ran out of ideas and just said - fuck it, she's into fucked up rabbit headed dolls with otherwise normal girl bodies, I regret my short career in film, and I'm never directing anything again. Which is why you haven't heard of him. IMDB Rating: 6. 5/10 - What? Higher than Honeymoon? Crazy. Gooey Rating: 5/10 Final Thoughts: First 2 acts were great. Ending was a total shit show. Sixth Sense did it better. You're 12 years too late. Some of the role players are weird for weirdness sake and not because they're properly fleshed out (Judd the creepy groundskeeper. Whole thing brings it down to a 5, which I would say is average. Would I recommend it? Yea, but be prepared for the feel good ending of the year. Day 3: Circle (2015) Quick summary: Mysterious closed room. No context. 50 strangers. Everyone secretly votes on who dies next. Someone dies every 2 minutes. Gooey Says: Great concept and great execution. Entire cast is pretty much unknown which really helps since the whole point is that 50 strangers were randomly snatched up and put in a room that deals out death every 2 minutes. Seeing Brad Pitt standing on one of the spots would have really ruined the illusion. I won't give away much. Strengths were the concept, the twists and turns, the overall believability of how alliances are formed and destroyed and how values are fluid and easily manipulated. Weaknesses were that some actors were better than others and some roles pushed the believability a bit, just too over the top. I mean, it's a tough task for 50 actors to all convey a wide array of emotions about life and death without a few dead spots, but I also think character selection was really thoughtful. The characters unite and divide based around class, age, race, occupation, morality, and more. The whole movie is a metaphor about how we judge each other and how, essentially, all these ways that we value or devalue people are pointless and arbitrary. It works as an allegory without being preachy. In my opinion, it would be a great "text" for high schoolers to view, interpret, and discuss. Would also make an outstanding play if the audience sat in the center of the circle. Not bloody. No jump scares. Just a good, solid 90 minutes of tense social analysis. 1/10. Way too low in my opinion. Gooey Rating: 8/10 Final Thoughts: Innovative. Clever. A lot to take away. Highly recommend! Day 4: Exam (2009) Quick summary: 8 candidates for an incredibly desirable job are locked in a room for their final test. They turn their papers over to begin the exam and find the papers are blank. They have 80 minutes to figure out how to "win" the position. Gooey Says: So Circle (2015) sent me down a rabbit-hole of locked room suspense movies, and Exam was the next one I chose (also on Netflix. I know I criticized Circle for having some caricatures (the suspenders wearing lawyer, the miserly old banker) but Exam REALLY lacks self-awareness about what constitutes a believable character. My god. The shrewd, glasses wearing psychologist; the laid back, coin flipping gambler; the white investment banker who's a manipulative alpha-douche; the timid blonde secretarial type. I'm not describing archetypes, I'm describing actual characters from this film. The ending is pretty divisive. I imagine there's a cohort who think it's very clever. I was not one of them. I thought Circle's ending was both satisfying without giving too much away. Exam's is probably what an edgy teenager thinks would be a real mindfuck. 9/10 - Jesus, is everything a 6? Gooey Rating: 5/10 - Very average. Final Thoughts: Watch Circle. If you're like me and you're trying to avoid watching any movies that are actually scary or gory (oh god, V/H/S 2 is on my no) then watch Exam. I'll probably watch a few more of these locked room suspensers. I have 3-4 more on my list. Eventually I'll have to watch something actually scary like "We Are Still Here" or "The Houses October Built" something that will make an adult man purchase a night light from Home though night lights are creepy too. Sigh Happy October. Day 5: Spectral (2016) Quick Summary: Netflix original. DARPA is a research lab that develops tech for the military. They've developed a specialized form of night vision goggles that are being tested by Delta Force, who are embedded in a Moldovan Civil War. The goggles start to pick up strange anomalies, electrical energy in the vague shape of people. When a soldier confronts one of the anomalies and is killed by it, Delta force sends for Dr. Clyne (James Badge Dale) head engineer of DARPA, to figure out what's going on. Gooey Says: I guess I'm guilty of still seeing Netflix as a low-budget player in the movie business, but films like Spectral prove that Netflix has the budget and ability to bring a fully-realized, feature length sci-fi/horror movie to fruition. That's right! It's a slash! Another day without watching an "actual" scary movie! In your face, The Hills Have Eyes! If you don't like green-saturation, then you might not like the cinematography, but I found the lighting and visuals captivating from the first shot (go check it out. Casting was strong. Amazing role player Bruce Greenwood plays the General, which is great, because he pretty much plays a general or the president in everything he's in. Emily Mortimer plays a government bureaucrat who's tasked with figuring out what the anomalies are, and she has enough depth to be likable. Mortimer's results-driven persona is the foil for Dr. Clyne's philosopher-poet-scientist, and she'd be the love-interest in 99% of movies, but I respected that Spectral doesn't force a love connection between the two (spoiler only if you're a teenage girl or you own The Notebook on DVD. I have no idea who David Badge Hale is. Oops, it's James Badge Hale. Hmmm, he was in The Departed and Ironman 3, and World War Z. I don't remember him in anything. He's decent. His character is essentially the only person who is keeping their calm while everyone else is losing their shit over ghosts, insurgents in active camouflage technology, spirits of war, etc. But his super-cool persona makes him a little hard to relate to; he has too many Dr. House moments. You know, where everyone's arguing and yelling and the calm, collected Dr. House breaks in with some mind-blowing inference that no one would have possibly put together? There's a pretty strong "Science is the Answer" motif throughout the whole movie, and at this point I began my conspiracy theory about Spectral being a product of the Department of Defense's Film Division. You know how the Navy allowed Top Gun to use all of its footage because they knew the movie would be an incredible recruitment tool? That's how I started to feel about Spectral. Tons of helicopters in the movie, including Ospreys (those vertical take off, dual-propeller airplanes that kept crashing and killing everyone on board. How does Netflix get a hold of those without the military's ok? It also stars Delta Force, the uber special-ops strike force, and about 10 characters who use this line verbatim: They're the best of the best. HILARIOUS SPOILERS BELOW! I just really wanted Spectral to have the balls to be a movie about Delta Force blowing the shit out of a bunch of ghosts, but, of course, there has to be a scientific reason why these things exist. It turns out that the regime of Moldova has been heavily investing in futuristic weapons and the result is beings made entirely from something called Bose-Einstein condensate. Spectral gives this condensate a pretty tall task: invisible to the naked eye, fatal-to-the-touch, crawling and running and screaming like zombies from I Am Legend. So I looked it up on Wikipedia and here's what it says: A Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter of a dilute gas of bosons cooled to temperatures very close to absolute zero (that is, very near 0 K or −273. 15 C. Under such conditions, a large fraction of bosons occupy the lowest quantum state, at which point microscopic quantum phenomena, particularly wavefunction interference, become apparent. I'm down with sci-fi, but who the hell made the leap from that sentence to crazy, amorphous, invisible, killer zombies? If Albert Einstein saw this movie he would take a quantum shit in his pants. I mean, I know that if I had a podcast it would be called "James vs. Act III" because I'm always so critical of how movies wrap things up, but this one was really strange. Who is the audience for this movie? Neil De Grasse Tyson? Who jumps up out of their seat when Dr. Clyne calmly says "Bose-Einstein condensate" and yells, YES! I was waiting for a horror movie to tap this goldmine. EVP looks like Nobel Prize science next to this stuff. Anywho. The movie speeds up rapidly, from 90% of Delta Force being killed by these "ghosts" to Dr. Clyne somehow Mcguyver-ing a whole slew of beam emitting guns from a collapsed subway tunnel. It's the strangest montage I've ever seen. It's entirely composed of very close-up, very intentional shots of Dr. Clyne wiring and drilling and soldering components together. Who is this movie for. How can the plot involve both super-theoretical plasma condensate and a montage where a scientist makes advanced particle beam weapons from rubble! Those two things are in direct contrast with each other! It's like the screenwriter slept through an advanced physics class, and all he remembers is Bose-Einstein condensate. The final scene is Dr. Clyne stoically boarding a helicopter after saving the day, leaving a tearful Emily Mortimer behind. It's pretty funny. It's so self-serious. "Sorry human female, I must return to my laboratory and continue my science, a lonely pursuit. Science awayyyyyyyy. IMDB Rating: 6. 3/10 - A 6. Unsurprising. Gooey Rating: 6/10 Final Thoughts: It's fun. It's well shot. Special effect are impressive. Casting is good. Dialogue holds up for the most part. Act III is my main complaint, but the movie is above average. It loses all pretense and becomes a ridiculous video game at the end with a bunch of particle rifle-carrying soldiers yelling "Get some. But it's fine. Everything is fine. Scarier movies are on the horizon. Prepare yourself for reviews with me screaming "What the actual fuck. over and over again. Happy October! Day 6: The Call Up (2016) Quick Summary: Eight gamers are summoned to a mysterious corporation's NYC offices to test a new virtual reality game. Turns out if you die in the game, you die in real life too. They have to make it through 22(ish) floors of virtual terrorists to escape with their lives. Watch it or no? Gooey says "NO. Now you can read the spoilers guilt-free! Even I'm getting tired of this trend and it doesn't look like it's slowing down. Ready Player One is one of the few exceptions to a sci-fi sub-genre that is feeling very lazy. Yea, we get it. More people than ever are playing video games, and virtual reality is on the horizon, and the internet has largely crushed human decency by facilitating anonymous, sociopathic avatars with an unquenchable hunger for more and more extreme experiences (internet/Hellraiser reference. Wasn't Gerard Butler in a movie exactly like this? Budget and visuals are solid; aesthetic is sleek and futuristic. Even though it's set in NYC, it's a BBC production, and its outlook is one that I can only describe as British Futurist. There's a certain hopelessness in Britain's idea of the future. There's a bleakness under all that sheen. A kind of fatigue and vague wariness that only a country whose soil has been turned and furrowed by bombs can conjure. Cast is unknowns and it gets right to the plot, which I appreciate. Watching consecutive movies really screws with your sense of time. Some movies cover decades, some are set in real time (High Noon and Run Lola Run. This one doesn't beat around the bush. The disparate characters receive "The Call Up" and they're strapping on their virtual reality Halo-esque armor within 5 minutes. But at the same time, the movie is already jettisoning plot points. At first, I thought that only "elite" gamers were summoned for "The Call Up. But it's apparent that some of these people have never touched a video game much less a gun. They have gamer tags, but pretty much everyone is completely inept at any kind of group tactics or strategy except for an ex-military character. The crew quickly realizes that the shots they take hurt. A LOT. And that if they lose their body armor and get hit, they only have seconds to receive a medipen before the helmets they're wearing turn their brains to mush. I thought they would flip their helmets' visors up and down and eventually have them stuck in the "game mode" down. But the movie sidesteps that by having the game continue whether the visor is up (reality) or down (in game. This is a fairly clever sequence, and a character dies within the first 10% of the movie to prove that there's no easy way out of the game. SPOILERS YOU PROBABLY WEREN'T GOING TO WATCH THIS ANYWAY. HOWEVER, IF YOU'RE ON THE FENCE, GO READ A BOOK. WHY IS EVERYONE YELLING. Once the goal is established (get to the bottom of the building) the movie starts to lag. There're a lot of slow motion firefights; a few characters get hit and then revive themselves with their medipens. The virtual reality sergeant plays a fairly entertaining role when he appears and beats the living shit out of one of the characters for trying to remove his helmet. And the group clears floor after floor of terrorists. The two youngest/most attractive characters hit it off and there's some pretty half-hearted backstory where we learn that the "protagonist" in quotes because he's the best looking, youngest, and has a boo-hoo really the movie is pretty rudderless) lost his girlfriend in a house fire. "If only I could have saved her. EXTREME FORESHADOWING! People start to run out of medipens and now the deaths are for real. The alpha-weight-lifting douche turns out to be a HUGE douche (spoiler) and directly causes the deaths of two of the more awkward players. Our hero tricks the alpha-douche into being killed and three characters make it to the final level: protagonist-male, protagonist-female, and "DA CHIEF" a fairly quiet, Swedish-looking middle-aged gentleman. If I had been more heavily invested in this movie I might have thought it was significant that "DA CHIEF" kept getting the high scores on most of the levels. Instead, I felt only a mild irritation, akin to "That is such a dumb nickname. But it does turn out to be significant! Down to one medipen, the three eliminate all the terrorists, until a van door flies open with an M-60 behind it that takes down protagonist-male and protagonist-female. The male has the last medipen, and he crawls over to the female and stabs her with it, saving her life, and finally making up for his inability to save his girlfriend from the house fire. #redemption #blessed DA CHIEF does a slow motion dive to the detonator and hits it at the last second. Protagonist-female blacks out. When she comes to, she sees that DA CHIEF is out of his VR suit and into a fashionable blazer and pair of slacks. Turns out he owns the company and runs these events just for fun and to keep his skills sharp. He's annoyed when he sees her waking up early, but she disables the guard he sends to sedate her and kills the remaining guards before killing him. GRRRRRRRRL! She turns her back on the duffel bag full of cash (the prize was 100K, s not a lot) and walks out of the building into the light in a dramatic, music video-esque final sequence. IMDB Rating: 4. 8/10 - A 4! You KNOW it's bad! Gooey Rating: 3/10 Final Thoughts: It's below average. It has some sleekness to it, some funny moments, and some investment in the characters, but that mostly runs out after the first 15 minutes. Who gets a script that involves the characters traversing 22 floors of virtual-reality terrorists and thinks that it's not going to be a redundant, montaged-mess? It doesn't help that John McClane's bandaged feet have more personality than most of the cast. But at the end of the day, there weren't a lot of moments where I audibly groaned. So that's better than a 2, which means multiple groans, or a 1, wherein I question the existence of a loving God. Day 7: Be Afraid (2017) Quick Summary: Family moves to a small town in Pennsylvania and is haunted by dark figures that threaten to steal their child. Gooey Says: To usher in the "scary" movies, I chose Be Afraid, which. I 's a very dumb I'm TRYING ok? It starts ok enough. Stormy night, lights flickering, screaming child, parents unable to enter the room, dark a hat. Ok that's a little weird. There's very little that's identifiable about the thing that's haunting this family, but its most distinctive feature is a fedora. That's the opposite of scary to me. It's directed by Drew Gabreski whose first credit on IMDB is for "Rampage vs. King Mo: Winner Takes All. It turns out that Gabreski primarily films UFC promos (Quinton UFC's "Rampage" Jackson vs Muhammed "King Mo" in 2014) and this is his first horror movie. What a weird resume. "Typically, I shoot fight promos for UFC, but I really wanted to direct a horror movie that stars a boogeyman wearing a hat. 4 years later, a doctor moves his family (including his young son, Nathan) to the small town of Clarion, Pennsylvania (where the girl was originally taken by the hat wearing demon. Immediately, creepy stuff starts happening and Nathan has several conversations with his parents about the "man in his room at night. If I'm a parent and I hear that, my response is NOT "Go back to sleep" it's "HOLY FUCKING SHIT! WHO THE FUCK IS IN YOUR ROOM. But these parents give their normal patronizing responses, and things get weirder. There are some really beautiful establishing shots. Slow overhead panoramics of the town nestled into the bend of a river, surrounded by gold and red trees. And the first third of the movie has quite a bag of tricks when it comes to camera placement. Rising from the floor, hiding in corners, placing weird shapes or objects in the foreground or background. There's a dinner table conversation where the camera pans from behind a wall, shooting the family through a doorway, before continuing out of frame. I like it. It made me realize that few genres tolerate unique camera angles as much as horror films do. Overall, the director managed to convey a predator/prey vibe with his camera placement. These are my only compliments. Doctor starts having scary dreams and sleep paralysis. Sees the dark figures that Nathan has been talking about. Nathan is inexplicably allowed to wander out of the house again and again even though he always ends up at a dark, horrifying tunnel in the side of a hill. Time crawls by. I pause the movie when the characters finally arrive in front of the tunnel to confront the dark figures and there's less than 10 minutes left. Ballsy pacing. SPOILERS AHEAD The dark figures' origins are never explained, but they come and grab Nathan which prompts the family to go try and rescue him. Doctor goes in isn't some grand actualization for his character. It's not like he was always working and ignoring his kid and now he's finally taking a stand. No. He's a saint and he's always looking out for everyone and he has no character flaws and now he's sacrificing himself to go into a dark tunnel to save his son. So it's not that climactic a moment. He goes in and gets snatched by the dark figures. Nathan emerges from the tunnel unscathed, even though it's never explained. Doctor wakes up on the floor of the cave the next day, walks home, tries to talk to his family - everyone ignores him - then when he moves out of frame, we see from the family's perspective that he's become one of the dark shapes. Meh. IMD Rating: 4. 7/10 Gooey Rating: 2/10 Final Thoughts: I had high hopes. This movie had a 93% match on Netflix for me. Does anyone know how this new algorithm works? What was wrong with the stars? I'm less interested in what Netflix thinks I'll like, then to know what general consensus says about whether something's good or not. The algorithm isn't supposed to give me shitty movies it thinks I'll like, it's supposed to prevent me from watching shitty movies! YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! Anyway, skip this one. Not good. Train to Busan (2016) tomorrow, which is a Korean zombie film and it's supposed to be excellent. Watch it with me and let me know what you think! Day 8: Train To Busan (2016) Quick Summary: Korean zombie film. A father and daughter board a train from Seoul to Busan and slowly realize that not only has the rest of Korea been infected by a zombie outbreak, but also one of the carriers has made it on the train. Their only hope is Busan station, where they hope to find the military and safety. Watch it or no? Gooey says "YES. My favorite film so far. There's a lot of extremely smart filmmaking and clever plot work in this movie. The film introduces its principal characters quickly and efficiently. Father is an executive who spends little time with his family, leading to a divorce with his young wife. Daughter is an ADORABLE, precocious little girl who wants to go see her mom in Busan for her birthday. Father gives in and they board the train. We meet the rest of the cast on the train: a husband and his pregnant wife who are quickly likeable characters, a high school baseball team and their one cheerleader, two elderly sisters traveling together, an older businessman who is used to getting what he wants, etc. Placing a zombie outbreak on a train is brilliant. It's not just tight quarters without available weapons and security (hard to call the police on a train) the real genius is that each train car becomes a way to ratchet up or decrease the tension. Some cars offer intense action (fighting through a train car of zombies) nail-biting suspense (passing unnoticed through a train car of zombies) or a moment for the characters to catch their breath (safely in a train car without zombies. It works so well! It keeps the movie speeding forward (train pun. I'll see myself out. When I was a kid I loved the made-for-TV movie, the Langoliers, based on a Stephen King short story. One thing that stood out was the utter creepiness of the characters exploring an empty airport. Everything set for thousands of travelers, but no one there. There's something primal that warns us not to spend time in hastily abandoned places, and as the world grows more and more dense, and cities grow larger and larger, that eeriness is only increased. When Train to Busan's characters arrive at an empty train station in Daejeon, they have to venture out in search of safety. It's such a great moment. Cavernous train station, silent anticipation as they ride the escalator. No gags or tricks. No dark shadows moving in the background or clattering noises off camera, just patient suspense. Love it. I refuse to do any spoilers because this film is so worthwhile, so instead I'll end on a more meta note. The easiest zombie movie to make is an action movie (28 Days Later and other countless fast-moving zombie films. Having skeletal, cannabalistic, nearly invulnerable, inexhaustible, bad guys chasing good guys is easy. The second hardest to make is a scary zombie movie (Night of the Living Dead. Traditional zombies come with a lot of weaknesses: slow moving, unintelligent, unable to open doors, and not exactly stealthy. To make a scary zombie movie, you have to be patient and realize that a zombie's power comes from its relentless, immutable pursuit of its victim, no matter the speed. A good scary zombie film relies on creeping dread, not jump scares and chase sequences (also a reason why "It Follows" is such a great film. The hardest zombie film to make is a drama. I think this is why people are so attracted to The Walking Dead, they haven't seen zombies as a backdrop for humanity in crisis. There's a lot to plumb when our backs are against the wall: do we help others or ourselves? Do we band together or divide? Do we seize power or preserve democracy? Train to Busan explores these questions in an inventive and thoughtful way. I can say, without a doubt, this is the most human zombie movie I've ever seen. IMDB Rating: 7. 5/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 95% Gooey Rating: 10 Final Thoughts: It's great. Successful action, successful believability, successful characters, successful conflicts and resolutions. Give it a whirl. Day 9: Under the Shadow (2016) Quick Summary: Set in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq Conflict (80s) Shideh, a young wife, struggles to cope with the loss of her freedoms under the religious regime. Impending missile attacks, friction between husband and wife, the constant watch of neighbors and the police, and the recent death of her mother all contribute to Shideh's fraying psyche. When her daughter starts complaining of a Djinn in the house, Shideh ignores her. But as the haunting gets worse, even Shideh can no longer deny that something is wrong. Watch it or no? Gooey says "YES. Bad horror movies are often riddled with plot holes: why didn't they go to the police, why didn't they get a gun, why did they split up, why didn't they get in a car and get the hell out of there? Under the Shadow is the opposite. It's a complex horror movie that has so many layers of danger, both natural and supernatural, that the audience can't help but feel as trapped as Shideh, the young heroine of the film. I'm a sucker for foreign horror. It's harder to nitpick when you don't know the language, the customs, the local number for 911. And the fears of another culture are just as strange and expressive as the language. Particularly when those fears are linked to the stories and history of a place. In other words, somehow I doubt that a bunch of kids are sitting in Tehran watching Friday the 13th, thinking that Jason Voorhees is a terrifying American monster. But when you are watching a film about the thousand+ year old tradition of djinns and other spirits that you can't even say the name of without guarding against the evil eye, it's more than scare tactics. These are deeply held beliefs. They are not taken lightly. Which is one reason why I think Under the Shadow is such a spectacular movie. Shideh is a young woman who joined the political resistance against the Islamic regime and lost. She can no longer study medicine at the university, or go out without wearing a chador, she must hide her Jane Fonda workout tapes, her every move is watched and judged, and there's a ghost in her home. While Shideh pushes back against the fervent beliefs of her country, she comes face to face with the supernatural. There are many metaphors and implications for belief on a personal and religious level. This kind of ambiguity, makes it worth your time. If you've seen it and want to chat about it, post in the comments (watch out for spoilers if you haven't. Is It Scary? Probably not too bad for most. At one point, I silently paused the movie, got up, poured myself a glass of bourbon, and downed it before continuing. Sidenote: After my 9th consecutive horror movie, I've created a way of determining if a horror film will be suspenseful and awesome or cheesy and shitty. For a good, suspenseful movie: any shots without action in them are 5 seconds too long. Shot of a window. Shot of a character standing in the foreground. Shot of a tree lined street. If all are unnervingly long, you've got a good film on your hands. IMDB Rating: 7/10 - IMDB can no longer be trusted! Rotten Tomatoes: 99. Wow. Gooey Rating: 9 Final Thoughts: If you like gore and jump scares, this movie might not be for you. But if you like a careful filmmaker, a very believable heroine, an unusual location, and a very sinister spirit, you're in for a treat. If you haven't seen A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) it's another fantastic Iranian "horror" film. One of my absolute favorites. Not really a horror movie, but it has a vampire. Enjoy! Day 10: Raw (2017) Quick Summary: French. Very French. Young vegetarian girl goes to vet school where she's hazed and forced to eat rabbit kidney. She develops a taste for meat that is. unnatural. Watch it or no? Gooey says "Yes. There's a smart and sleek mind at work directing Raw. It could be very cheesy, it could be teenage schlock, but it manages to remain buoyant and be a clever and sometimes beautiful movie about a vegetarian becoming a cannibal. If it wasn't so French, it would be a red-blooded red-state American's wet dream. Don't eat beforehand. If you don't like watching characters regurgitate hair, or if you can't stand a healthy amount of blood and brain eating, then this is not the movie for you. All said though, this is a sleek little foreign film that's clever and its journeys into the absurd are far less offensive because of how irrepressibly foreign they are. I don't know who any of these actors are, but they carry the weight. Sound acting all around, and our ingenue turned meat eater is a little charmer. Is It Scary? No. Some parts are gross/gruesome, but not scary. IMDB rating: 7/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 90% Gooey Rating: 8 Final Thoughts: Clever premise. Several thousand ways it could have gone wrong, and I don't love the older sister character, but it's a complete film, and it's patient, and more than one scene will make you wish that you were a privileged French kid going to veterinarian university. Check it out! Day 11: 13 Demons (2016) Quick Summary: Three friends find a cursed board game and get sucked into the fantasy of saving the realm from 13 demons, blurring the line between innocent and enemy. Watch it or no? Gooey says "No. It had some promise. It could have been a rated R "Jumanji. And the three pot-smoking, liquor-drinking friends make for sympathetic likeable characters, but this movie really suffers from its low budget. The "fantasy" sequences, where the knights fight the demons are just shit. It's like someone filmed a rotating light behind some dorm room tapestry to try and convey that it's a hallucination. WE KNOW ITS A HALLUCINATION! THEY ARE FIGHTING DEMONS! A lot of similar reviews thought the movie was intended to be tongue in cheek and then took a wrong turn and became way too self-serious; I'd agree with those. The concept is interesting, the characters are likeable, and the transition into the madness of the game is mostly well done. But the hallucination sequences in-game are just horrible. Just unwatchable. And there're SO MANY OF THEM! I love that the director just said, Yep, here's this horrible music and rotating tie-dye, now here it is TWELVE MORE TIMES. The last 10 minutes of the movie is an insane shouting match between the deluded players and the police: Police: It's a game. Players: It's not a game. FOR 10 MINUTES! Are you kidding me? Is It Scary? No! Is it good? Also no. IMDB Rating: 3. 1/10 Rotten Tomatoes: Unrated. Lucky bastards. Gooey Rating: 2/10 Final Thoughts: The first 15 minutes had potential, but the incredibly cheap visualizations and loss of all self-humor made this one a slog to get through, even at a fairly trim 50ish minutes. Skip it.

The informer. The informer full movie. The informer imdb. YouTube. December 31, 2019 10:04AM PT Joel Kinnaman and Rosamund Pike head up a Feds-versus-cops-versus-mobsters B-thriller that knows its limits, and works tidily within them. The mere opening salvo of “ The Informer ” contains nearly enough plot to keep many a lesser shoot-em-up exercise occupied for an hour or two: Just 10 minutes into Andrea Di Stefano s undercover-mission-turned-prison-break-thriller, a family has been set on the run, an FBI bust on a Polish drug cartel has gone tensely awry, a characters identity has been neatly pulled out from under us, and a cop has been shot dead. Somehow, this impersonal but tightly wound Americanization of a Scandi-crime potboiler then continues escalating its short-of-breath narrative for almost two hours. For all “ The Informer ” lacks in surface style — shot and scored as it is in functional, straight-to-VOD fashion — it remains a surprisingly well-oiled genre machine. Opening Stateside in the January doldrums, several months after a modestly received late-summer bow in the U. K., this sophomore effort from Italian actor-turned-director Di Stefano is — like his Benicio del Toro-starring debut “Escobar: Paradise Lost” — a B-movie of the honest old school, dignified by the canny casting of consummate professionals who get the job done while plainly marking time. In particular, as the requisite timber-jawed man-against-the-system protagonist, Swedish star Joel Kinnaman brings a stern sense of purpose to proceedings. Slathered in tattoos and cracking nary a smile throughout, hes not an easily sympathetic presence, but his solemn, weight-of-the-world demeanor lends gravity to the films otherwise credibility-defying pileup of action setpieces. Loosely adapted from the 2016 novel “Three Minutes” by Swedish crime-writing duo Roslund & Hellström, this largely British-funded production relocates the action from Colombia to a vaguely defined New York City, somewhat streamlining its international tangle of heavies: everyones indeterminately American save for the generically villainized Polish drug mafia. After doing time for bar-brawling manslaughter, rough-hewn but good-hearted family man Pete Koslow (Kinnaman) wants a quiet life with his wife (Ana de Armas, her thin role all the more glaring in the wake of her “Knives Out” stardom) and daughter. The FBI has other plans for him, however: In exchange for early parole, hes made to act as an undercover agent in various seamy, ill-organized narcotics busts. When one goes horribly wrong — in that aforementioned, hopped-up opening act — and a clashing undercover cop is killed, Polish drug lord “the General” (Eugene Lipinski) determines that Pete must take the fall. His returning to prison, meanwhile, suits the Feds, as Petes aloof but emotionally invested handler Wilcox (Rosamund Pike) changes tack to bring things down from the inside. Yet corrupt forces from higher up are working against them, as Wilcoxs slithery superior (Clive Owen) threatens to drop the project entirely, while NYPD officer Grens (Common) has his own meddling eye on the case following his colleagues death. The ensuing tic-tac-toe game of double- and triple-crossings is busy but coherent: the screenplay, co-written by Di Stefano with genre regulars Rowan Joffe (“Before I Go to Sleep”) and Matt Cook (“Patriots Day”) keeps tidy tabs on the shifting stakes of the whole bloody tangle — even if, admittedly, it doesnt always give us an urgent reason to care whether Petes undone by the mafia or the authorities. In the potentially thankless role of a hands-tied FBI drone with limited backup above and below her station, Pike does a lot of the legwork in humanizing this standoff: The role benefits considerably from her pinched-nerve intelligence and cool chemistry with Kinnaman, even if, five years on from her Oscar nod for “Gone Girl, ” she feels a tad overqualified for the assignment. Tech credits are uniformly proficient, if never quite inspired. In its best sequences, notably that nippily edited introductory sting and a prison lockdown soundtracked to a mesmerically blaring alarm, that back-to-basics quality is prickly and effective; elsewhere, particularly in scenes centred on Commons underdeveloped cop, the film takes on a TV-procedural quality. Still, in the age of franchise blockbuster bloat, theres much to be said for an efficient B-movie that knows its place and purpose: Di Stefano, rather like his films brawny, brusque hero, has his mind on accomplishing the mission with as little flab and fuss as possible. By its very nature, science is supposed to be an impartial judge. But is it really? In her thought-provoking documentary “Coded Bias, ” director Shalini Kantayya questions the neutrality of technology, arguing that computers have a built-in bias that reflects the faulty assumptions of the people (usually men) who program them. I saw the high rating before I went to see this and hence my expectations soared. No doubt, the movie was beautifully filmed but it was just that. A thin plot and as I write this, I can't recall the ending even after watching it only yesterday.
